The Sacred Bean is a fabulous coffee house following in the footsteps of the Poets & Patriots, Mr. Toots, and The Ugly Mug all of Santa Cruz CA and the likes of which we didn't think we would ever find once leaving that magical place. But since the opening of The Sacred Bean, we feel like once again we have found "our place".  The baristas are excellent, talented and not hard on the eyes. Francesco, the owner, knows his coffees and teas, serving only the best organic brews. He, Marcello the Wonder Dog and the great crew have made it one of our favorite spots, and we want everyone to know about it.  Last night was very festive for the upcoming All Hallowed Eve.  Friday is always Random Acts of Talent night, an open mic forum where talented locals come perform in an atmosphere of celebration and acceptance. But last night was exceptional. Pumpkins carved by the staff were on exhibit to be voted on for "The Best" and they were excellent.  Performers from guitarists and singers to belly dancers entertained everyone. But the secret visit of "MJ" and the THRILLING choreography of The Zombies of Da Bean had everyone on their feet, putting their hands together, and the show brought down the house.  If you haven't been to "Da Bean" get yourself there!!!  And tell them Pirate Roy and his wench Jane sent you.

Soup Nazi Party at the Bowlsbys

Several years ago our little "gang" of 4 couples started getting together during the fall/winter/spring months to have a fun evening sharing delicious soups to warm our hearts, souls and bodies. It's proven a delightful venue, and we thusly  named it The Soup Nazi Parties in respect to the less than loveable Soup Nazi on Seinfeld.

Last week we had yet another incarnation. Although our usual members of Andrea & Houston Mayfield couldn't be with us--you were there in our hearts and conversation (and always remember, if you're not there, then we WILL talk about you--but only with love!!), we were joined by Joe & Nikki and Brenda.

As usual, the soups were sublime....Zesty Crab Chowder, Vietnames Noodle Soup (secret ingredient too awhile to guess but Gigi won the prize--cinnamon!), French Onion and Beef Soup, and SW White Bean & Chicken Chili.  Served with Broisin cheeses, crackers, olives, and fantastic whole grain breads, nothing could have been better. It was still warm enough to sit outside and eat, and as the sun set into the sky, giving everyone a glorious painting by Mother Nature, Scottie fired up the fire pit and everyone gathered around for warmth, conversation, and dessert.  Cake, a yummy sweet dessert wine with chocolate tones, and some Butter Burst too.

The big surprise of the evening actually began right at the start. Terrie and Paul had been in Jerome watching Tracy at Raku Gallery throw bowls a few weeks ago. They were so taken by the beauty of the colors and shapes, that they purchased a bunch of bowls. When they arrived, the bowls were unwrapped and displayed on the table for all to enjoy. But the big enjoyment and surprise came when we were all invited to pick out our favorite bowl...and after filling and eating it this evening it would be ours to take home with us.  An early Christmas present!  What a wonderful gift for everyone. We've used ours several times this week and thoroughly enjoy them. Plus we think of our wonderful friends and their generosity each time we use them.

As usual, the crowd was happy, carried on intelligent and upbeat conversations, and everyone had smiles on their faces and full bellies when the party broke up.  And there were promises to do it again soon as there seems to be a mutual contention that it is going to be a long cold winter...and how better to stay warm than with friends, hot soup, and flaming logs!!

Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes

A year ago I couldn't walk the 4 blocks around the courthouse square. Last weekend I not only walked 4 blocks, but actually 4 miles. And not just on the flat ground but up and down hills. I walked with a big "foot" pinned to my chest with the following: "Roy, Sue, Cindy, Carly, Tom--I'm walking for all of you!" Husband, sister, niece, girlhood friend, and wonderful friend in Cave Creek, whom all have diabetes.

And I didn't do it alone, but with a group of wonderful friends. All of these fantastic women lead busy working lives, and I know had other things they needed to do on a sunny Saturday in mid-October, but because of our friendships, they were there to do the walk and support me in my endeavor. The group was aptly named The Fab Friends, and raised over $250 total.

A big thanks to these great friends; for their support, participation and donations. And to all of the wonderful donors who helped raise the money for this close to my heart organization, the American Diabetes Association.

Pigs vs Peccaries

Here's Porkchop & Petunia

So, here are a couple of photos of javelinas. For those of you unfamiliar with the little critters, they may look like hairy pigs to you, but they are not. They are peccaries.

Fall Means Canning

It's funny, but come fall my head and heart turns to canning. Even though I do not live on a farm, I long to do just that. To have a garden, a small orchard, chickens, and a couple of dogs.

Autumn, Peaches and Apples Have Arrived

Autumn has arrived, with cooler temps and the smell of lit fireplaces to drive off the chill. Trees are turning various shades of yellow, gold and red, and the kaleidoscope of colors become a fall mosaic as they litter the forest floor.
